Personal History: Fear is a superpower.
Personality:
Clara is a clever and bright individual, someone who catches on fairly quick when in the presence of others which is part of the reason the Doctor took her on as a traveling companion. Often times she's picked up on small things that her alien friend might have missed out on, small tidbits that can often times help him in helping others. On more than one occasion, it was Clara who saved the Doctor or kept other people around them alive with her strategies. It even got to the point where UNIT would contact her on the matter of strange oddities when the Doctor wasn't answering their calls. She even could operate parts of the TARDIS after being shown how and picked up on how alien tech worked. Of course, it didn't stop there, eventually, Clara became an English teacher at a school and had no trouble teaching her students or keeping up with them intellectually.
For such a long time one thing Clara had wanted was to travel, to visit all of the places in a book her mother once had. Of course, it was a book that contained only places on Earth so when she was offered the chance of a lifetime to go anywhere in time and space, she took the opportunity. While she is also aware of her responsibilities, Clara hops in the TARDIS to see a world much bigger than the one contained in her book. It doesn't matter where they go she is always excited and eager to see what lays beyond the doors. Even all these years later, she's still wide-eyed and extremely interested in the places they go. She enjoys it so much that she even lied to her boyfriend about not traveling anymore, not to mention that she couldn't give it up after said boyfriend's death. While traveling with the Doctor does not consume her entire life, it is one of her most favorite things to do. There were times when Clara referred to it as her hobby even if sometimes those trips left her feeling vulnerable.
From the get-go, Clara was a feisty one. She wasn't afraid to say what was on her mind to this stranger who had invaded her life. While she's become close with the Doctor, it doesn't stop there as Clara is not one to hold back even when facing off against a creature that would kill her. Never once was she the sort to hold back when confronting someone, sometimes it would be done playfully while other times she was outright serious. Though Clara does know when to not point such things out and often acted as a sort of conscious for the Doctor when he would bowl right over sensitive subjects without a thought to other people's feelings. Typically this was reserved for the Twelfth incarnation as he tended to be a little more insensitive but the Eleventh was prone it on occasion as well. From the beginning, she made it clear that she would not be a replacement for a ghost (though she was technically talking about her own splintered lives) but it would have also applied to any previous companion the Doctor had.
Clara is someone who holds a deep curiosity and is eager to learn all that she can. This is a trait that a lot of the companions tend to share as most of them have to be curious in order to step inside of a ship that can take them anywhere with an absolute stranger. Not only was she willing to step into a ship but she always tries new things without much hesitation. The first time she was presented with alien food Clara took a bit before finding out if it might be harmful to her. She always absorbs what's being said around her with rapt interest and asks questions when she can. There was even a point when Clara pretended to be the Doctor and even adopts some of his mannerisms.
More than once people have referred to Clara as being a bossy person and she definitely can be. As a nanny, it was something a necessity in order to look after the children and something she tended to do even with people who weren't kids. This definitely included the Doctor - no matter what he looked like. Even though she had already made up her mind to travel with the Doctor, Clara told him to come back the next day anyway. For the longest while she wouldn't admit to it out loud but when under the Truth Field she did say it when she was babbling. It's true, she does tend like to be in control of whatever she possibly can even though traveling with the Doctor does sort of throw that out of the window.
For the most part, she's a very confident woman, both in her life choices and in herself as well. At the start Clara didn't have any issue about being a nanny or that she had yet to visit all of the places inside her book. She was confident that she was right where she needed to be in her career choice and that one day she would get the opportunity to travel. It rarely bothered Clara to suddenly become the only human in a crowd of aliens or be a girl out of time. In fact, she flourished and always tended to want to look the part when she could, being one of the few of the later companions who typically dressed up. There are definitely times when her confidence is shaken, though. Usually brought on by having one of the biggest burdens placed on her shoulders such as the fate of all mankind. When this happens her confidence wavers and what follows is usually an emotional anger that she points at the Doctor. She absolutely hates it when the Doctor puts her in these situations and not offer up any kind of guidance or support. While she may not need him to hold her hand all of the time, Clara gets angry when he pushes these huge responsibilities on her shoulders while acting as if he doesn't care either way. It's one thing for her to step up willingly and another for him to force her into it with such a dismissive act.
That said Clara can definitely get emotional and most of the time it is with good reason. While she can brave her way through a dangerous situation, she tends to get wrapped up in the emotions and feelings flying around. Clara isn't afraid to shed a few tears when she feels sad or upset, won't hold back her anger or even her happiness. She is certainly the kind of person who wears her emotions on her sleeve for everyone to witness. There have been several occasions when Clara has cried over one thing or another - not afraid to get a little teary even as she's yelling and being bossy. When the Eleventh Doctor tried to push her away as he was growing older and dying, she was expressing a whole variety of emotions all at the same time while attempting to make sure that he didn't send her away again. Clara is very good at experiencing multiple emotions all at once and still having each one of them right there in the open.
She is also a brave individual, perhaps recklessly so at times considering the times she's put her own life at risk. There are definitely times when she's afraid of the danger that's standing in front of her but Clara faces it head-on anyway. While she may be willing to put her life on the line, she's also going to fight to stay alive in whatever way she can. No matter how many times she may come close to dying it has yet to scare her away from traveling with the Doctor. There's a bit of a thrill to it for her - surviving by the skin of her teeth that she can't give up. Even when she confessed to her boyfriend that she wasn't sure she could travel with the Doctor anymore, Clara couldn't walk away from it in the end. It didn't help that Clara was a fair bit selfless on top of it all, willing to sacrifice both herself and the things she cared about on multiple occasions. She gave up items that meant a great deal to her but to her, a physical object didn't mean merely as much as a life did. When she became attached to someone and started caring for them, there was absolutely nothing she wouldn't do for them. Her most selfless act was when Clara stepped into the Doctor's timestream which ripped her apart into hundreds or even millions of pieces in order to fight off the Great Intelligence so that he wouldn't die. Clara had done it knowing that she would die and she'd barely hesitated over the fact, facing her fate with courage. In the end, the Doctor ended up saving her but she had still been capable of protecting the people she cared about without thought for her own safety.
Part of her self-sacrificing nature stems from how kind she is. Underneath the fiery and sassy layers, she is a compassionate person who is often looking out for those around her. It doesn't matter if Clara just met the person, she is constantly trying to keep them alive by doing whatever she can. Anyone who happens to end up in her good graces will find themselves with someone who would do anything for them. Since the Doctor's regeneration, Clara has found herself acting as his conscious when it comes to the well-being of the people around them more and more. He tends to overlook things as he gets so wrapped up in the moment and so it's become her responsibility to point out when lives are being risked needlessly. Of course, those who Clara cares about most are the ones that she tends to defend to the extreme but she can't just think about their physical well-being but also for their mental and emotional state as well. It's good that she cares enough for the both of them.
