Character (Original Universe)
Name: Mirai Kuriyama
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Canon: Beyond the Boundary
Canon Point: Episode 12 - after she disappears completely (so she's actually dead)
History: How Unpleasant
Personality:
Due to the fact that her bloodline is considered cursed due to their blood-wielding abilities, Mirai has spent most of her life being hated or feared. Their fear of her abilities caused most people to lash out at her and has even hunted down anyone with her bloodline until she was the only one left. This has left Mirai with a very isolated life to the point where she's interacted with very few people in a friendly manner. It wasn't until later in her life that she finally had someone she could call a friend and even that ended badly. The death of that friend caused her to withdraw from getting close to others even more.
Since she's had so few interactions with people and most of them weren't all that great, Mirai can come off shy. It's so obvious that she isn't used to dealing with people in many of her actions such as how she fidgets or stammers when nervous and is often rather nervous. Most of the time she has a hard time approaching others first to start up conversations and tends to fumble for words. Opening up to someone is not easy for her to do and trusting them is even harder. Having her consider a person her friend is difficult but not impossible. Often times she purposely distances herself from people as she doesn't want them to get hurt and she doesn't want to get hurt in the process. Her self-isolation does not help her get better at dealing with others at all especially when she does actually attempt to push them away.
That said, once Mirai does befriend someone she is the sort who would fight and die for them. Everyone she's ever cared about has suffered something horrible - sometimes because of her - and so she does whatever she can to protect them. Even if she has to protect them from themselves. Mirai would lay down her life for those she cares about and fight with everything she has in order to keep them alive. It doesn't matter if that's against their wishes because she's tired of seeing her friends and loved ones get hurt. Especially considering that most of the time it leads to their deaths.
At the start of the series Mirai is actually afraid of her own power, too afraid to kill that she can't even fight a youmu. She attempts to overcome this fear by attacking someone who's considered immortal but that inevitably fails. It isn't until that same individual encourages her to destroy the youmu that she accomplishes overcoming this fear. These days she doesn't hesitate to strike down her enemy though it would be a little harder for her to kill a human enemy if faced with that decision. However if it were for the sake of others, Mirai could manage to do it.
Mirai is the blunt sort of individual, often saying what is on her mind when actually talking to someone. She will not hesitate to tell someone what she thinks as it is sort of a defense mechanism that she's developed over the years. There are a few exceptions to this such as when Mirai uses the phrase "how unpleasant" - these two words are spoken in a wide variety of ways and all of them have their own meaning. Sometimes she uses it sincerely and then there are the times when it's the exact opposite. Usually she says it as a deflector from things she finds not unpleasant at all because it can be hard to admit to something that she does like.
Though typically she's also the sort of person that most people would overlook if she were standing in a room with other people in the first place. She doesn't go out of her way to draw attention to her, it simply happens and usually happens because she accidentally trips or causes some other disaster. These acts of clumsiness often lead to her feeling more nervous and losing a bit of self-confidence which causes more accidents. However when there is a sword or a weapon in her hand, Mirai is actually fairly graceful with her actions. Her mishaps aren't so bad and she's rather agile on her feet when she might have been clumsy a minute before.
Mirai is absolutely terrible at lying. Even people who have just met her would be able to tell when she was lying as she can't look at them, can't speak without stuttering, wipes her glasses and can't even actually get the lie out sometimes. Mostly she tends to use the trick of cleaning her glasses to buy time so she can think up the lie in the first place. When there truly is something she doesn't want to tell, Mirai tends to be a bit more harsh with her words - attempting to hurt the other individual so that they back off first. This was the technique she used on Akihito when she didn't want him to know about her past or to let him get him involved in her life.
Mirai is often seen as a bottomless pit partly due to her power relying on using her blood to attack and that makes her anemic. She would take money if offered to her or even allow someone to buy her food even if she will feel a little guilty about it. It's extremely hard to resist the call of food even if that means taking a bite from someone's fork. Often her actions do not match in these instances as she may be verbally declining even as she reaches for whatever is being held out to her. When someone offers to buy her a meal Mirai has a tendency to order a lot of food in one sitting. That said, she does know how to share as well. If she felt someone has helped her in some way Mirai may buy them something - typically whatever her pitiful paychecks can afford. Though she also won't hesitate to put a big of food on their plate as well. It's her own little way of showing her gratitude when she might not be able to verbally say it at the time.
Of course it's not just her food situation where her budget takes a hit, a lot of her money does go into her hobby of buying and maintaining bonsai trees. Mirai is absolutely obsessed with the little plants that she is willing to spend almost all of her money on them. Even money she should have been using for rent or other basic necessities. She was even quick to join the Literature Club because they had a rare book on gardening that only members were supposedly allow to read. Once in the club, Mirai then began bringing her bonsai to sit in the window until they started outnumbering the amount of club members. Should one of her plants be damaged, she won't hesitate to threaten the one responsible with bodily harm.
She is easily agitated by others, typically when they're getting a little too close. This causes her to become flustered or ruffled as if she were a cat. It can have a variety of effects on her whether she becomes angry or depressed. Sometimes keeping up with her sudden mood changes is difficult as she can go from 0-100 in the blink of an eye. Usually when she becomes forlorn, Mirai resorts to pouring her feelings out on her blog even as she says what she's typing out loud at the same time. Which only makes things worse when people respond negatively on her blog as well. When angered she practically bristles with the emotions, becoming snappish and is quick to withdraw after expressing herself. This, of course, does not cover how she acts when angered in a deeper manner.
Mirai is a person who expresses herself through her various actions just as much as she does when using words. Most of her tiny movements are an expression of her feelings such as when she cleans her glasses whenever she's nervous or pushes them further up on her face in determination. Even the way she walks shows her emotions whether she's walking stiffly with coldness or slumped in defeat. When scared her movements become rather frantic and when she's nervous there's that clumsiness showing throw. Of course when she's confident all of her movements reflect that too, whether she's fighting or simply being casual in a situation. If she finds herself in a situation where she isn't sure what to do or is generally uncomfortable, there's a bit of tension seen visibly in the way she holds herself. When she's downright sad she makes herself as small as possible as if that is enough to disappear into obscurity.
Despite all of the rough edges of Mirai's personality underneath it all she is a very kind girl. She longs for all the things normal people do and has rarely gotten it but that hasn't changed the fact that she is a kind-hearted person. Mirai is constantly choosing to do the impossibly difficult things in order to help those around her such as when she decided to confront Sakura about the death of her sister. While at first she had been willing to allow the girl her revenge Mirai never held their fights against her. When Sakura gave up her revenge, Mirai took the other girl into her home and proceeded to look after her - making sure she ate or got to school. After all, she does her best to not do damage to public property and even has issues ruining buckets or fences in pursuit of her enemies. Though, of course, she does prioritize the lives of living things over inanimate objects.
She can also be polite to the extreme. Seriously, who nicely asks someone to stand still so that she can stab them in an attempt to kill them? Mirai does, that's who. Of course she's often polite in the way that most Japanese people are - using a lot of suffixes that fit the person she's speaking to. She typically calls them by their last name as is typically taught and only only uses first names with those who she becomes close to. Upon meeting someone or apologizing she will bow out of respect and typically doesn't use vulgar language or gestures to express herself, not that she needs to with the rest of her body language helping her out. That said, she is not afraid to call someone a pervert if the shoe fits though she isn't about to do it without extremely good reason.
One cannot describe Mirai without touching on at least two of her more important relationship. The first one is of a girl named Yui Inami who was a little older than her. She met Yui when staying with a family after her mother's death and Yui was her first friend. Yui never acted afraid of her and wasn't family, not to mention they were close in age. It seemed as if Yui was the only person who could come close to understanding how Mirai felt and of course it wove them together rather closely. Which is why she was so devastated by the other girl's death. Yui was killed right in front of her and Mirai's fear stopped her from saving the older girl. The guilt of that is something she still carries around with her to this day, it's haunted her and always will a little bit. In fact, it did when she met her next friend.
Akihito Kanbara and Mirai's relationship is crazy but that's what happens when she tries to kill him on multiple occasions after meeting him. Since she wouldn't leave him alone, Akihito returned the favor when it seemed like Mirai was through trying to kill him. He was her main source of annoyance as he constantly butted into her personal life and didn't take the hint when she pushed him away. Eventually she finally found the one person who really could understand how she felt and Akihito helped some of her own self-hatred go away. It led to them being a strange sort of friends and eventually Mirai's feelings went beyond friendship. She just simply loved him. She loved him so much that she couldn't kill him and instead sacrificed her own life to save his. Though of course she had trouble expressing this until the bitter end.
Other than her two closest friends Yui and Akihito, she is also close with Sakura. Back when Yui was alive the girl was more of their little tagalong who always looked up to them. Sakura was jealous of their great ability and potential as Spirit World Warriors. Not that it was ever shown, she was just a girl who wished she could do more. All of that changed when Yui died. She made an attempt to become like a replacement as Mirai's best friend but she was too lost in her own guilt and grief that it fell apart. Upon finding out Mirai's role in Yui's death, Sakura blamed her. Blamed her so much that Sakura got herself a weapon that could fight youmu and become strong enough to take her revenge. At first Mirai was willing to let this happen but Akihito changed her. Mirai was able to confront her own guilt and then attempted to help Sakura do the same. She never once blamed Sakura for trying to kill her and even took the girl in. From then on Mirai was like an older sister, looking after her in one way or another but was also the one of the closest friends she had.
After that came her relationship with the various Nase siblings. She might not have been close with Izumi but the eldest sister was the reason she met the others in the first place. If anything, their relationship was one built on business rather than anything else. However, it was Izumi who allowed Mirai the opportunity to save Akihito instead of killing him. And she wasn't as close to Hiroomi as she was with the youngest sister. Most of their interactions dealt with club business or were often through other people but she did respect him a great deal. Especially after seeing the scars on his back that had come from dealing with Akihito when the boy had been out of control. One could consider them to be friends as they do tend to have a lot of group activities where they all go have fun or attempt to beat a troublesome youmu together. He is someone that she would fight to protect if it came down it and he would do the same but they are rarely seen hanging out alone together.
Her most important relationship with the Nase siblings comes in the form of Mitsuki. Mitsuki is different from the other friends she's ever had in the past, more reserved and quiet though often going out of her way to tease or harass the boys. At first Mirai was just sort a shadow whenever both Mitsuki and Akihito were together. It took Mirai a lot longer to open up and feel comfortable around the other girl than it did with Akihito. What they started out with a polite friendship but it bloomed into something strong and unique. They worked together to catch youmu, Mitsuki got Mirai some relatively normal jobs while Mirai convinced the other girl to attend a festival for the first time in her life. Not to mention that they make quite the girl power duo when performing in an attempt to capture one troublesome and stinky enemy. While neither of them are the sort to simply shout out their feelings to each other all of the time, they have gotten passed the point where they don't dance around the issues either. Basically Mirai finds her friendship with Mitsuki to not be unpleasant.
The Shindo youmu sisters are also someone of importance to Mirai. Upon first meeting Ai, she freaked out when she realized the young girl was actually a youmu. It had never occured to her that there might be youmu who wanted to live peacefully with humans and she was literally getting a crash course. She's known the pair of them for a while now and she has great respect for Ayaka while Ai is definitely more of a friend. Ayaka is also technically her boss and if Mirai kills a youmu, she's the one who pays for the remains. After spending her life being taught and told that youmu are the enemy it certainly wasn't hard to accept that these two were different. It was easy to tell the difference being around them for a short amount of time.
All-in-all she is not a bad person just bad at interacting with others because she's done so little of it. Since meeting Akihito she has gotten better but there's still a long way to go. Without anyone she knows in Melodies, she will have the opportunity to branch out and meet new people since she can't huddle in the small circle of friends she already has. Since no one knows (or would care) about her cursed bloodline, it will be a good chance for her to break out of her comfort zone.
Third-Person Sample:
In all honesty, Mirai expected the blackness - the nothingness that accompanied death after she said her farewell to Akihito. She had only existed inside that place, nothing more than her own consciousness as she'd destroyed her body long ago. What was left of her had crumbled, slowly at first before shattering completely and then fading into nothing. That's why it doesn't seem strange to her at first. Everything had already slipped through her fingers and there wasn't anything left of her anymore. All that would remain would be the memories left in the minds of those who knew her, which weren't that many people to start with.
It's fine. This is how it was supposed to be. She had accepted that this would be her fate upon defeating Kyoukai no Kanata. Which it's more surprising for there to be a faint light that she reaches out for and a voice calling to her. A voice that has trouble waking her up but when it does, Mirai physically jolted upright until she was suddenly standing on her feet.
"Eh?!" She's so deeply startled. Mirai blinked at the sudden burst of light and the sense of being again, confused on how this is possible. In her hand is a crystal and her surroundings are completely unfamiliar. As if all of that wasn't bad enough a strange creature floated into her line of sight and she screamed - stepping back so quickly that her balance is lost and Mirai landed on her butt.
When the moogle moved in closer, Mirai crab-walked back as fast as she possibly could in order to get away. It could be considered a funny scene considering she's clutching the crystal in one hand and therefore can't use it to shuffle backwards. Her three-limbed crab only ended when she collided with something... or someone. Mirai doesn't even spare a glance back at the wall as she reached to pull at the ring around the thumb of her right hand. Once removed, she held out her hand and...
Nothing! Nothing was happening. There was no blood dripping from her hand that would allow her to form her weapon and the strange creature was once again coming closer. This was it, she would be killed by a youmu - one that was tiny and sort of cute and dangerous. She was technically already dead so it probably wouldn't matter but Mirai certainly wasn't about to go without attacking so she does the only thing she can think of.
She threw her crystal at the moogle, who merely caught the projectile. "Careful! You don't want to damage or lose this, kupo!"
Now without any weapon, Mirai stared at the moogle who - she realized - was not attacking her. Her now empty hand reached up to push her glasses further up her nose to prevent them from sliding off completely. "You aren't going to kill me?"
"No way, you're a Hero! Why I would want to kill you? I've been sent to help you, kupo."
It's happened before, youmu who had no interest in fighting humans. This was apparently one of them. All of the panic that had gripped her mere moments before were gone now, she was a little more confident even if she was still sprawled out on the ground. "Help me? Help me do what?"
"To save the world, kupo!" The moogle responded rather happily. She floated closer and held out the crystal which Mirai took back. "I'll tell you all about it! First you should apologize to your fellow Hero!" With that Riaru gestured to the thing behind her that Mirai had mistaken for a wall moments before.
"Eh?" Now she looked back and those are certainly a pair of legs her back is pressed against. Just as quick as she found herself there, Mirai is up on her feet again and bowing to the other individual several times. "Please forgive me! I didn't mean to inconvienence you!"
Mognet Sample:
Hello, my name is Mirai Kuriyama. I'm a new arrival to this world.
Can anyone tell me where the most inexpensive restaurants are located or a store where there might be a sale on food? I haven't got a lot of money so anywhere I can get as much as I possibly can would be helpful.
One of my jobs is Water Bender but I don't know how to use it. My little creature says that there are movements that would help me learn but nothing I've tried has worked as of yet. Actually, I should say that it hasn't worked well. Certainly nothing I could use against an enemy effectively. I've looked in the library and the books aren't exactly helpful so I was wondering if anyone else knows anything about this job.
