Character’s Full Name: Merlin || Emrys || Dragoon the Great
Fandom: Merlin BBC
Are they from (an anime, book, manga, video game, etc.): TV show
Age of Character: 18-early twenties
Point in Canon: Episode 4x13: After Arthur pulls Excaliber from the stone, before taking back Camelot from Morgana.
۞ History: "If I can't use magic then what have I got? I'm just a nobody and I always will be."
۞ Personality:
Merlin, for the most part is a cheery man who usually has a smile for everyone he meets. This means that he’s a fairly friendly person who gets along with a lot of different types of people from royalty to the lowest commoner. While sure, he definitely doesn’t get along with all royalty there are quite a few, especially those who don’t look down on him for being a servant. Most of Merlin’s close friends are the working sort however, but despite being pretty poor he doesn’t let his social class make him unhappy. It’s actually only in serious situations where you won’t catch him smiling. This is thanks to not only the way his mother raised him but also what his mentor, Gaius has taught him.
They’ve also shown him how to be kind to others. So he may not always be kind to those he thinks are prats like Arthur when they first met it doesn’t mean Merlin won’t go out of his way to help them. Sometimes his kindness gets him into a lot of trouble as Merlin often risks exposure to himself in order to save someone’s life. Risking exposure of his magic is a huge deal for him seeing as how magic is banned from the kingdom and often results in death. However, his own life doesn’t matter and he’ll sacrifice it in order to save someone else from a horrible fate. Time after time Merlin has put his own life on the line because he wouldn’t want someone to get hurt or die, sometimes on his behalf. Merlin is simply that selfless; he’s even stopped using magic on to help out his daily life and uses it to better other people’s lives.
It also doesn’t help that Merlin always tries to see the good in people even when he’s been warned about them, much like how he tried to save Morgana and Mordred. Even when faced with evil Merlin will try to talk to them, to get them to stop whatever their doing and be better. Over the years he has learned to be a little suspicious of people seeing as how so many beings have come to Camelot in order to do harm against the Pendragons. Though he doesn’t always just assume that everyone is bad or wants to do harm, he does try to give them the benefit of the doubt even if he can be a little wary from time to time.
Despite the rough start with Arthur and his opinions of the prince, Merlin has unwavering loyalty. Over time he’s come to see that Arthur isn’t the cruel, cold, bitter man like his father, or the bratty, jerk of a prince he’d first thought Arthur was. After realizing just how much Arthur cares for his subjects and worries over the sake of the kingdom Merlin has become a very loyal servant. He even went so far as to save Uther on several occasions when the man clearly deserves all of the vengeance of those he’s wronged. There’s almost nothing Merlin won’t do to save the newly appointed king from the dangers that lurk around him, even though it means hiding his powers.
Merlin is also quite outspoken, often saying what is on his mind no matter who he might offend. Even after he learned about Arthur being the prince of Camelot he continues to call him names like ‘dollop head’ and ‘clotpole’, though mostly in jest. He does have to try really hard to keep quiet while around other royalty so as not to offend them and be sentenced to death. However, Merlin is not afraid to speak up and make seemingly outrageous claims while in the presence of any and all royalty. He also bursts in on private meetings in order to state his opinion or the things he’s seen. Suffice to say that Merlin is pretty cheeky, especially with Arthur who’s become friends with while still maintaining their social statuses.
Due to magic being forbidden in Camelot, Merlin has had to become secretive. He’s lied about things that he may or may not have seen (or done) or about why he’s in someone’s room when he shouldn’t be. Sometimes these lies make him seem like an idiot as he sort of fumbles over them when he gets caught by surprise. However he’s far from that. Thanks to Gaius’ guidance Merlin has become fairly wise, knowing the right things to say. Even Arthur tells him that he’s wise but Merlin often screws it up by making a fool of himself with his clumsy, because Merlin is clumsy. Usually his clumsiness happens when he’s nervous and trying to hide things.
He’s been told that he’s the bravest of them all by a knight of Camelot, even though most people don’t even know what he’s done. And he is brave. Due to the fact that he will forfeit his own life in order to save others, Merlin could be considered very brave. He faces things most normal people wouldn’t or couldn’t. And most of the time he’s modest about it too. He knows that he won’t get praised for using his magic to save Camelot or someone’s life because no one really knows he does it. However, when he is feeling underappreciated and stressed Merlin can point out the fact that he doesn’t get recognition for the things he does. Yet when he does get praised he just smiles and laughs, not making a big deal out of it.
Now, Merlin is an optimist. He not only believes and tries to see the good in most people but he also believes that everything will turn out okay too. Most of the time it does, and when it doesn’t (because life isn’t fair) he’s hit really hard by the grief that normally follows. Merlin is also very concerned with fairness. He hates to see people punished just for what they are or things they haven’t done. There’s a ton of guilt when he sees people punished for things that he’s done and Merlin has even confessed to doing magic though his claims were never taken seriously. He will do anything to make things right.
He’s also a very determined individual. Despite the fact that the life of a servant isn’t a glorious job and being Arthur’s manservant definitely may involve terrifying situations Merlin treks on beside him. It also shows in the way he tries to point out when people aren’t always what they seem. For some reason Merlin often finds himself in the right places at the right time that allow him to see things others can’t. He’s usually the one who sees that someone’s really a sorcerer or a troll or something else out to ruin Camelot. A lot of the time he tries to tell Arthur even though he’s usually ignored. So Merlin usually works in secret with Gaius’ help to expose the creature that’s plotting, even if he’s wanted as a criminal.
On top of everything else Merlin will kill to protect those he cares about. In fact he has a cruel side that he shows towards enemies. He’s often cold and dangerous when someone becomes his enemy, not thinking twice about eliminating the threat. Even afterwards he doesn’t feel a lot of remorse for killing them either. When Nimueh nearly killed Gaius he struck her down with lightning in order to restore the balance of life and death and felt nothing after. However there are rare times when he does feel bad about things, like when he poisoned Morgana. It’s because she was his friend before she turned evil.
As Dragoon the Great (or Emrys to Morgana), a lot of Merlin’s personality stays the same although he does become a little more crotchety like older people do. He often speaks his own mind, much more than he usually would as there’s no chance of being caught. His sense of humor also becomes very dry and sarcastic when he’s like this. Dragoon or (Emrys) is also rather fearsome when he’s like this, not having to deal with any of the consequences or the fear of being caught. So Merlin definitely releases his full potential when he’s posing as Dragoon.
۞ Magical Powers, Skills, and Weapons:
Merlin himself has said that magic isn't just part of him, it's who he is and it's true. He's had the ability to use magic since birth and while he didn't actively use it for a long while he has been studying since his arrival in Camelot. Despite not learning for most of his life he's a quick learner, able to use simple spells fairly easily after just discovering them. Yet some of the harder spells may take him a while. Merlin can do things such as create light, start fires, use magic as sort of telekinesis, turn inanimate creatures into something real and even slow down time.
His ability is so great that he can sense powerful magics that are nearby. There's also a bit of telepathy going on between him and other strong magic-users. Telepathy doesn't stop there, it can also be used to teach him spells. Another thing of note is that Merlin is the last Dragonlord. He can speak in their language and command dragons to do his bidding. Generally he uses this ability to get advice or when the situation is very dire. He also has a strong magic resilience, able to survive his own reflected killing spell.
While it won't ever come up Merlin has mastered the power over life and death. Sure it may sound wonderful but in order to save a life meant to die but in return a life must be taken. The risk of saving someone is just too great for Merlin to play with. However, it doesn't mean he's useless when it comes to saving someone. For the longest time he'd been unable to heal people but he has finally been able to do it.
It should be noted that Merlin keeps his ability to use magic under a tight lock-and-key as magic is forbidden in Camelot. Generally when he's in the company of those who don't know Merlin tries to keep his spells to do the minimum. It's only when he's alone or with people who knows that he can let loose if he needs to. There are times when he can use it for things such as cleaning but not if there's a chance he's going to get caught. He's pretty good at being sneaky. Though there is one way that Merlin can use magic freely without being marked for execution - by turning himself old. The sorcerer known as Dragoon the Great and even Emrys to Morgana does not hold back with his magic as Merlin normally uses this form in times of great trouble.
۞ Other Abilities:
While most of Merlin's skill and abilities lie in magic he does know how to do other things. He can clean (though not very well), has been learning to care for people with herbs, can ride a horse, wield weapons (again, not all that well), collect firewood, cook basic meals, put armor on someone else.
۞ Journal Sample:
[While hesitant to use magic so openly (even if it was someone else's magic mirror), he has to get answers. The entire fate of a kingdom depends on it. So, visitors of Ever After have one dorky looking guy staring at the rippling mirror.]
I'm sure you probably get this a lot but I'm looking for some people. It's important I find them. Gaius, he's an elderly physician, Gwen or Guinevere, she's a blacksmith's daughter who works -- worked in a castle, King Arthur Pendragon or any of the Knights of Camelot. If anyone sees them tell them Merlin is looking for them.
[Merlin seriously hopes that Morgana isn't here too, or any of the men working for her. It'd be pretty bad to be stuck here with her.]
I'm going to look for work in the morning. Suppose I should be grateful to that turniphead and Gaius for everything I've learned since coming to Camelot. Maybe I can find a physician to be an apprentice to as I'd rather not have to muck out stalls. Does anyone know if commoners are welcome to train with the soldier? I'm not very good and Arthur will make training ten times worse if he finds out I wasn't keeping up with it.
۞ Third Person Sample:
His eyes flew open the instant he became aware of himself, sitting up in the bed one hand clutching at his heart. There had been magic, powerful magic. In fact, he felt it here all around him. Merlin shifted to put his booted feet on the stone floor, a hand wrapping around the edge of the bed. The blanket was soft beneath his calloused fingers, making him aware that this was not his bed in Camelot and certainly not his bed on the floor in Ealdor. No neither of those places were right. They were on the run, preparing to take back Camelot from Morgana with the others who had escaped the kingdom. Hadn’t he been struck with the idea of sneaking in as Dragoon in order to weaken her for their battle tomorrow?
What was going on? Merlin put a hand to his head trying to remember. Laughter, there had been laughter accompanying the powerful magic he’d felt and a cold chill that left the bitter taste of something wicked in its wake. Where ever this place was, it wasn’t Camelot or the surrounding areas; that much was true if the magic he felt vibrating around him was any indication. Speaking of magic, there was one source moving towards him. Merlin felt disoriented after the explanation even as he walked down the hallways. Evil queen witches, an entire kingdom where magic was accepted even studied in a school. This would be enough to send Arthur and almost everyone else in Camelot a little mad. What really bothered him was that all magic was registered with the guild like a knight would when joining Camelot’s loyal guard.
Could he risk it? Could he go and register his abilities for the whole kingdom to know about? There was the chance that Arthur was here and what would the king think if he found out his servant had magic all these years? It was something he certainly had to consider because Merlin would use his magic, it was who he was. Maybe he could ask them not to say anything about his magic to anyone? There had to be some sort of privacy. And learning the magic of this kingdom was definitely out of the question, he would just have to study in private, even though he was without the book Gaius had given him.
As he made his way to the inn he’d been directed to, Merlin opened his sack and pulled out the mirror Vincent had said was magical. Would this really allow him to contact the others who had come here? Would Arthur, Gwen or any of the others be here? Merlin wanted – no needed to get home. He couldn’t afford to waste any time here, not with Morgana sitting on Camelot’s throne, Gaius in prison along with the others who’d been trapped inside. Maybe someone who’d been brought here would know how to get back. It was worth a try. Even that dollophead king couldn’t be mad at him for using a magic object to get home to help save the kingdom.
