SERIES: Young Justice
CHRONOLOGY: Episode 1x22: Agendas
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Opting in for Heropa

BACKGROUND:
"Superboy, you live. That gives you the right to follow your own path. A weapon or a person, the choice is yours, but ask yourself, "What would Superman do?" - Aqualad"

Superboy comes from a world similar to our own but with heroes and villains with the big superhero group known as the Justice League. This group is made up of superheroes from not just around Earth but also around the galaxy, all of them dedicated to protecting humanity. Now sometimes the bad guys team up but currently their main and quite secret group is known as the Light. This organization is the reason behind Superboy's existence, he was created to serve them by a group known as Cadmus from the DNA of Superman.

Superboy is the whole reason the Young Justice team was created - Aqualad, Robin and Kid Flash went to investigate a fire set to attract the attention of the Justice League by fellow genomorph, Dubbilex. After deciding he wanted freedom they brought down Cadmus and with that, the beginnings of the Team was formed with Superboy as the fourth member. Since Batman decided they could handle missions, he's been living in Mount Justice alongside Miss Martian and eventually Zatanna. He's the muscle of the Team and the one to take the hardest of hits due to his Kryptonian DNA but Superboy is also the brash, angry member who doesn't always use his head.

To his "father", Superman, he's not sure what he is but the brush-off relationship is a great source of his anger. While to his other DNA donor, Lex Luthor, he's a pawn to be manipulated for the Light's purposes. Of course, to members of the Justice League (and others) he is suspected of being a spy for the enemy due to his Cadmus upbringing. More privately, he's Miss Martian's boyfriend and Artemis' White Rabbit. Right now, Superboy walks a fine line between right and wrong - one "parent" versus the other and if he decides wrong then the fate of the world will be tipped in their favor that much more.

PERSONALITY:

If you’re looking for the talkative member of the team then look somewhere else because it’s not Conner. He’s a teen of few words and instead prefers to leave the talking to other people. Actually, Conner is one of the quieter members on the team next to Aqualad. Rather than talk a lot about just anything, he prefers to save it for important things. To him, actions have always said more than words ever could and that’s how he does things. Conner is also a pretty serious person most of the time and is the type to give the situation at hand his full attention whether it is in battle or just socially. Of course, that’s not to say that he’s serious all of the time and he does have happier and lighter moments even if they tend to be fairly brief. There are teammates that this side of him is easier to show as they’ve been around him the longest. A lot of these lighter times are simply due to him being calm rather than anything else.

Needless to say that having the power of Superman (or a lot of them anyway) has made Conner pretty confident in his own abilities. Despite all of the times that he gets his butt kicked by the bad guy there was once that he believed that he didn’t need to train or learn hand-to-combat. Superboy believed that he always had the upper hand in a fight simply because of his strength and invulnerability. When Black Canary showed him just how wrong he was, he wouldn’t accept it. On top of his frustration came his arrogance and he attempted to battle a robot that the powers of most of the Justice League all by himself. During the fight, Superboy realized that his powers alone would not win him a fight and went to Black Canary to be trained. So while his arrogance has deflated a great deal, it is still there.

Anyone who spends even the smallest bit of time with Conner will discover that sometimes his answer to some situations is to use violence. He is not the Plan Guy of the team, he’s the muscle. This trait of his only becomes worse when he’s angry for one reason or another. It takes someone with a cooler head than him to point out a different solution or maybe even a reason for one thing or another. Still, in his opinion a lot of things could be solved if they hit it with all of the force of a moving car. When he uses the shields that suppress his human DNA, that anger can’t be quelled. The more the patches are used, the worse it appears to get and eventually he won’t listen to reason at all.

As if his temper wasn’t bad enough Conner is defiant down to his core. It’s been there since the moment he woke up. First he was defiant to his rescuers and told them not to order him around but then he turned it towards the people who created and held him. To go even further, Superboy was even defiant towards The Batman. He knew what he wanted and no one was going to stop him from doing it. For a long while, that defiance was still directed towards everyone even his own teammates but soon he started to reserve it for people he didn’t like or didn’t respect. It still exists but he’s learned to save it for the people who aren’t looking out for him – most of the time. Of course, it has done nothing for his stubborn nature. Conner has his own way of doing things and there isn’t a lot to change that. Sometimes he has a habit of leaping before he looks and honestly, it’s hard to stop that once it’s in motion.

Another of his more negative traits is his confrontational side. Just because he’s stopped being defiant towards his teammates doesn’t mean he won’t step up when he thinks there’s something wrong. When there is a situation that he doesn’t want to use his fists to solve, then he uses his words. Superboy may be a teen of few words but he also won’t hesitate to speak up when he feels it’s necessary. This is very apparent when he discovers that Aqualad had been hiding the fact that he thought there could be a mole on the team. The moment he heard about that, he immediately confronted the other teen about it and it was loud enough that the rest of the team heard it too. He believed that such an important thing should not have been hidden from them.

A lot of his negative traits can be traced back to all of the unresolved issues he has, especially from his “fathers”. First off there’s Superman who seems to want nothing to do with him and that makes Conner angry. Then there’s Luthor who is a known criminal and wants something from him. The only time he’s met the guy, Luthor used him to solve one of his problems. So he’s stuck between a “father” he wants to be like and one who wants to use him. It leads to a lot of conflicted emotions and it’s not exactly something he just resolve in the amount of time he’s been free. Of course, it really doesn’t help that sometimes Conner is insecure about the fact that he doesn’t have all of Superman’s powers. When he found out he couldn’t fly like Superman he was crushed by the thought. While he has somewhat accepted this, part of him does want to be like the man of steel. It’s the reason that he kept Luthor’s gift that allowed him to access all of his Kryptonian abilities despite the side affect of being angry.

One thing that isn’t due to his unresolved ‘father’ issues is the part of him that’s socially awkward. Growing up in a tube with three genomes teaching him everything he needs to know doesn’t lead to a boy being able to just fit into a normal life. It’s easier to be social with the team because they know his background, they fit into his everyday life and he doesn’t have any secrets from them. He does normal things with them such as going to the mall, playing on the beach or even camping even if they don’t exactly do things the way other kids (these are heroes, after all). That’s why Conner started school and even took on a human name – to learn to socialize with other people outside of the team. His first day wasn’t exactly perfect but he’s gained a few friends and even while he’s still awkward with them, Conner is learning to adjust. He even takes part in actual normal things such as a Halloween dance or goes to M’gann’s cheerleadering events.

Despite his gruff and serious exterior, Conner can be really kind at times. Not just to his team who he’s the most comfortable around but he’s also picked up a couple of strays in the form of a sphere from another planet and a chemically-enhanced wolf. Because Superboy was sort of an oddball, he feels a connection to others like himself. But he’s not just nice to odd creatures and he has shown a soft side towards children. Even when they’re hanging off of him, Superboy shows a great deal of patience that he doesn’t show towards a lot of other people. It’s part of who he is but part of it is also because Superboy aspires to be a good hero. While it is in his “programming” to become like Superman (or destroy him should he stray from the Light), it’s something he truly wants. There are times when he doesn’t want to become the next Superman but to make a name for himself instead. Of course, he does feel a flash of satisfaction to be looked to in Superman’s place. It’s so strong that later he feels guilty about it because the rest of his team is traumatized.

A great deal of the story is about the loyalty of certain team members when Aqualad hears a rumor about a spy being on the team. One of those people is Superboy because no one knows just what kind of “programming” the genomes put into his head. Consciously, he is one of the most loyal people to those who have earned his trust and respect. The team is practically his family, they’re the people who accepted from the beginning and he would never do anything to betray them. Because of that, Superboy is a protective sort of person. He doesn’t have much in the way of people he wouldn’t want to lose but they’re it. That means that he’d do everything possible to protect them and sometimes that protectiveness can be a little aggressive. Of course, someone who puts so much into someone only ends up feeling more betrayed and it hurts a great deal.

Now, just because he has a lot of emotions that doesn’t mean he talks about them. At first it was difficult to express anything but anger because he’d never done it before and therefore didn’t know how. This was especially true towards M’gann when she used her telepathic abilities on him and he overreacted. He lashed out and didn’t know how to fix it later. It took a little guidance from Aqualad and even then he wasn’t exactly sure how to do it so he just kind of had to go for it. He has gotten better at talking about his emotions at times but Superboy isn’t about to open up to just anyone. Of course, just because he can talk about his own feelings on rare occasions, doesn’t mean he can be the listener that other people are for him. How do feelings work?

POWER:

[Kryptonian Abilities:] Due to his Kryptonian DNA he absorbs a yellow sun's solar energy that gives him all of his abilities. Because of his human donor, Superboy lacks all of the advanced powers such as flight and heat vision but by using the Shields given to him by Luthor he can gain them. Of course he's also susceptible to Kryptonite.
  • [SUPERSTRENGTH:] What it says on the tin. He can easily lift a car though he struggles with semi-trucks/buses. Because of his human DNA, Superboy can't fly but he does use his superstrength to leap tall buildings.
  • [INVULNERABILITY:] Superboy is nearly indestructible. He can take a lot of damage and come away without so much as a scratch in most instances However, he does feel pain still.
  • [SUPERHEARING:] This gives him the ability to pick up the smallest of sounds even over a long distance and high-pitched frequencies not audible to humans.
  • [INFARED VISION:] He can detect heat signatures and allows him to see easily in the dark.

[Kobra-Venom Enhanced Wolf:] A wolf that's been enhanced with the new Kobra-Venom. It transforms them into a huge musclebound monster and hardens the skin. That being said, Wolf is larger than a normal wolf, his head comes to about Superboy's shoulders. He has superstrength and enhanced durability along with increased intelligence.

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:

When he sat down on the couch the house had been empty of everyone except him and Wolf. No one would mind the static on the TV that way, or the teenager who’s just staring at it rather blankly. It’s not something he does often anymore but the white noise helped him to block out distracting voices around him. The big white wolf lay at his feet, leaving him alone with his feelings. A lot had happened in the last day that he needed to absorb and really think about. Life-changing events.

The most important was his family. He’d known Superman from the moment he’d opened his eyes in his pod. Before that actually. While he was unconscious the genomes had shown and taught him so much about the world – about Superman. That first night was the night when he’d finally gotten to meet the man of steel in person only to be scorned. Since then Superman hadn’t wanted anything to do with him and Conner knew it. There were times when it wasn’t so bad because he had the team and they were like a family to him. So even though he was being cast aside by the only blood-relative he had, Conner had people who relied on him and trusted him.

Now Conner had more than just Superman. First there had been his older brother, Match. He’d seen Match in the pod and been determined to save him from the life that had once been his. Except his brother had been a full Kryptonian with all of Superman’s powers and that had driven him insane. Nothing Conner had done was enough to save Match from his own existence and he’d been forced to put his brother back to sleep. He’d learned just why he had never been able to fly or had the full power of Superman – he was half-human. Not only was Superman the unwilling donor to his life but so was Lex Luthor. They were two sides of the same fight, always against each other – a battle of good and evil.

While Superman wanted nothing to do with him, Lex opened his arms wide and was willing to accept him. After months of being rejected by the man he had once admired, there was almost something encouraging in being wanted by one of his ‘parents’. Not that Conner would ever side with Luthor but the man had wanted to help him, even if it was for his own gain. Superman hadn’t even done that. He wouldn’t even train him or help him discover the limits of his power.

Conner reached into his pocket and pulled out the case that Luthor had given to him. Inside lay seven patches that inhibited his human DNA and allowed him access to his full Kryptonian powers. The single time he had used it was like a rush. He could fly and even shoot lasers from his eyes and it was one of the closest times he’d been like Superman. At the same time he’d been seeing red and his temper was off the charts – even for him. Was it worth the price to become like Superman? His hand tightened around the case and it creaked in protest.

Without ever finding an answer, he put it back. Just in case.

FINAL NOTES: Superboy has something called shields that were given to him by Lex Luthor. These patches can be applied to the skin and suppress his human DNA to allow him full access to his Kryptonian powers for about an hour. These abilities include flight, ex-ray vision, heat vision and even give him a boost to his strength. However, the downside to suppressing his human side is that he becomes angrier and looses control over his ability to think first. While these shields can come in handy he only has a limited number - seven after his use of the first one.
