Canon Point: Zack's Final Stand - Just before his death
History: "Hey, would you say I became a hero?"
Personality:
Over the course of war and situations, Zack has changed a lot from the kid that he used to be. All of the traits are still there but he’s matured so some have become more dominant. He’s a very sincere individual, hardly ever saying anything that he doesn’t mean and generally trying to speak the truth. Sometimes he even needs people to stop him from saying something that might be a little harsh because all of his emotions are just worn on his sleeve. What you see is exactly what you get with Zack; it’s what draws a lot of people to him. He’s also very generous. Need an item? Get it for free from Zack. Maybe someone doesn’t even know that they need something and he’ll still give it for free. Like with Aerith, he offered to build her a flower wagon and bought her a ribbon.
In general, he’s just downright helpful. No mission is too small or big for him to take on if it means helping someone out, even if he has to go out of his way to do it. On occasion he actually puts off his orders in order to help out someone he came across along the way. Zack is also encouraging, trying to impress on people both the ideals he has and the one passed down to him from Angeal. When one of the lower class SOLDIERs has doubts about doing his job, Zack encouraged him to keep trying and took on several missions so that the guy could be motivated to do it himself. He’s also been trying to get Aerith to sell her flowers above the plate despite the fact that it frightens her. At one point he even said that he’d go with her, though in the four years of his capture she found the courage to go alone. Of course in order to be encouraging it means that Zack also has to be positive himself. And he is. While there are things that get him down from time-to-time, he bounces back easier than other people do. Sometimes it needs a little push from other people or reminders of Angeal but he gets there.
There is no doubt about it, no matter what point he’s from Zack is very sociable. He will talk to anyone and everyone if given the chance. Even his more sentient enemies before he kicks their butt. Who else could make a friend out of a Turk to the point where she would turn her back and help him escape? It was really helpful when he went searching for Wutai spies since they didn’t have a lot of information to go off of and it sometimes meant knowing specific things about them. Really, he signs up for all kinds of fan clubs or groups that he gets mail from. Zack even gets constant mail from his friend, Kunsel, about some inside scoops on situations. To be sociable he also has to be friendly. He gets along with a lot of people, even people who have a grudge or unpleasant feelings towards Shinra. Sometimes he’s even capable of changing their opinion about it with his outgoing personality.
Then there are the moments when he’s a little too friendly with the females that cross his path. Zack is the kind of guy who flirts, though he is loyal when he’s dating someone. When he’s single though, beware the overfriendly guy. Some might say he’s not very good at it but there are some girls who find him charming. Zack is also a fairly tactile person, not hesitating to touch other people – whether it’s bumping fists, putting arm around their shoulder or ruffling their hair. Of course there are some people who you couldn’t pay him to touch, like Sephiroth. That guy is kind of scary, alright. However Zack will talk back to him on occasion or kick his ass if he needs it.
If you ask certain people what Zack is like, they’ll compare him to a puppy and it’s true. He has a lot of excess energy to burn and can be easily excitable at times. Sometimes he does squats just because he has to do something, it’s his favorite thing to fall back on and it was quite well-known around the building that he does it a lot. When he learned that he’d been recommended for 1st, Zack became excited and even hugged his mentor. While his excitement doesn’t get the best of him like it used to, he still has his outbursts. Also like a puppy, he has a low attention span and gets distracted from what he’s supposed to be doing. He can set his mind to do a task and get it done when Zack really focuses but honestly, things are distracting. People also tend to keep things from him or are very cryptic and Zack even says that he fights who he’s told to fight, not figure things out. There’s also a sort of cheerfulness to him, even when he grows up after having to kill his mentor. Part of that positive attitude of his is included in that cheerful nature.
Another thing that makes him a lot like a puppy is his strong loyalties. For the longest time he was loyal to Shinra and wanted all of his subordinates to be too so he instilled that in them. Then he learned that they were making monsters and experimented on him and Cloud. So that loyalty was broken. But there is always a loyalty towards certain people. Zack kept asking himself ‘what would Angeal do’ because he looked up to the man, but he also trusted him and believed in his ideals. It would have been easy for someone to abandoned Cloud to Shinra in order to save themselves but he isn’t that kind of person. Instead he took on the care of the comatose kid simply because they were friends; after all, the kid fought Sephiroth for him and was gravely injured in the fight. Zack is fiercely protective of the bonds he makes. Again, he started out fighting for Shinra; both on the battlefield and off. Just like his loyalty, his protectiveness extends to the people he cares for. Whether that means carrying on Angeal’s wish to save Genesis or stand against the army of Shinra for Cloud and give his life, is just who he is.
Of course, this talk of Zack wouldn’t be complete without talking about the ideals that he got from Angeal. It’s something he’s tried to base his life around ever since the man died and passed on his sword. Honor was something that was very important to this mentor so it became important to Zack too. He is proud to be everything a SOLDIER is supposed to symbolize and will protect it to the bitter end, no matter what he has to do. Though Zack is often reluctant to fight those who are supposed to be on the same side. On top of that he has an integrity that would put some people to shame. Genesis has done quite a lot to give Zack a lot of reason to dislike him, but in the end he still tried to save the other SOLDIER. He might kill all of those copies without prejudice but saving him was what Angeal and Sephiroth both wanted (before Sephiroth turned crazy) so that’s what Zack did. Then he carried him out of the tunnels instead of just leaving him there.
He holds on to his dreams so tightly and encourages others to do the same, because everyone should have a dream that they’re willing to fight for. It’s important to him, his dream that Zack doesn’t care if it makes people laugh at him or think he’s foolish. To become a hero may be an unattainable dream to some people but no matter since he’s completely driven by this dream. No one is going to change his mind about it; Zack is just that stubborn about it. That stubbornness doesn’t just cover his dream; it also applies to other things in life like the strength of will it took to break himself free from a mako tank or to return to Midgar to see Aerith again with the entire army on their trail.

Third-Person Sample:
None of them knew what waited for them all in the future, not a single one. At least he hoped they didn't know. It really wouldn't be good if Sephiroth knew those things seeing as how he doesn't want to be on the sharp end of the general's sword again. Though honestly Zack wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Sephiroth had the inkling that something was wrong just from the other SOLDIER's reactions around him. Zack wasn't exactly the best at hiding emotions, especially not from his face. Surely the expression of surprise was enough to make the general ponder why. He suspected that Genesis knew though. Knew that a small town called Nibelheim would be burned to the ground and all of its residents killed but he couldn't just talk to Genesis. The guy would probably want to fight him all over again if he spoke of their last encounter.
And of course he couldn't tell Angeal. Not right now. The guy had both of his friends back and there was no way Zack was going to shatter that by burdening him with information. He couldn't even talk to Cloud about this because his friend was before all of that horror, before the experimentation and unconscious state. Suddenly Zack missed his silent blond-haired companion that had been by him for nearly a year. He could just talk and talk some more and the comatose Cloud never complained, never had any real secrets to keep from anyone.
Zack jumped off the bed in a single fluid motion and paced the room, eyes continuously darting towards the large sword that rested against the wall. The Buster Sword that he inherited from its previous wielder certainly saw a lot more use since it came into his position and he has to wonder if Angeal had one too - one that didn't have the wear and tear that his did. It didn't have any rust even though he hadn't been able to take care of it properly while in Hojo's hands.
With his mind on the past he can't also help but think of the future. Of the people from the future. There's the Treasure Princess who had been a huge source of annoyance but also some amusement. She had grown up in the last few years but was still such a kid. Couldn't talk to her. Then there was Tifa, Cloud's childhood friend. Gods, Tifa. Last he'd seen, she was curled up in a ball with her back turned towards him and saying that she hated Shinra. But Tifa wasn't the girl left severely wounded by Sephiroth anymore. But maybe he should try talking to her, it might not land him with a fist to the face.
Settled, he picked up the heavy sword with one hand and swung it around until it was resting securely against his back. Zack felt naked without it, he felt safe with it - especially in a place he didn't know that well. Once he was outside was when he realized that he didn't know where Tifa lived. After considering whether he should write to her or just try to find her, Zack decided that he had energy to spare. So he took off at a steady jog in between the houses.
An hour later bore no results and he headed out of the district. He was just about to give up and send her a letter when a sign caught his eye as he jogged by. Zack took several steps back before turning to face it fully. The name set off a reminder in the back of his head - another time and place. Somewhere in the slums back when he first met a flower girl and several of the other inhabitants. A carpenter had been going to build a bar and Zack had mentioned the name that now graced this sign: 7th Heaven. Without realizing it, he was suddenly inside and it seemed nicer than what he had pictured back then. He especially didn't picture it with a familiar bartender.
Zack moved through the tables and daytime drinkers to sit on one of the stools at the bar. "Hey Tifa. What do you recommend?"
Smooth.

RE: Treasure Princess
If anyone's had their things taken over the last few days by the Treasure Princess but didn't manage to collect it, I got it back when I went to pick up my stuff from her. Nothing is damaged but I'd really like to return it so send me a note telling me what it was and where to find you and I'll be there shortly.
