Personality:
Anyone who ever knows Ran even just a little will know just how kind she is. She can meet anyone and just instantly be nice to them, even if they aren’t nice in return. Ran has no issue approaching someone who looks sad or trouble and asking if they’re okay. Most of the time her kindness knows no bounds, though, Ran won’t show mercy to those who would hurt anyone while she’s around. When she genuinely cares for someone Ran will go above and beyond for them. She will not only do things because they ask, but she is just as willing to protect them with everything she has. Of course that also means doing what is best for them even if they don’t like it.

Ran’s loyalty is unshakeable too. Never once would she doubt someone who has earned her trust. She would follow them into any situation if necessary, even ones that completely terrify her. It doesn’t matter if they attempt to push her away with harsh words, Ran would still stand by them. Because of that Ran has to have a great deal of faith in the people she chooses to be loyal to. She has to be willing to trust them not just with her life but also those she may come in contact with. That’s why it hurts when someone does something to break that trust. Though the more she trusts someone the bigger the crime they’ll have to do in order to completely destroy her trust in them.

She has a lot of patience too. This comes from her friendship with Shinichi who can be absolutely downright frustrating at times. For as long as they’ve been friends he’s always been talking about Holmes. He’s practically obsessed with the fictional man and Conan Doyle’s work. At first Ran went along with this obsession, taking an interest in the things her friend was but as time wore on Ran was more prone to get more and more frustrated with it. However, her tolerance level for other things was heightened greatly because of it. This doesn’t mean Ran hates Sherlock Holmes. Thanks to all of Shinichi’s incessant talk she can recall things he’s said in order to help when she needs it.

For someone her age, Ran is very adventurous. She’s willing to put herself outside of her comfort level to go new places. If it’s somewhere she wants to go, Ran won’t hesitate to go when offered. However, she is very humble about it – often thanking those who invited her along. A lot of the time Ran is the one dragged around to various places because of her friends or her father’s job. If the situation allows for it, Ran will invite those she’s close to as well because the more the merrier. She is, at any age, a curious girl. Good for those adventures she has. Ran is never afraid to ask questions when she wants to know about something or even get herself into a situation where she can discover the answer for herself. This, of course, can get pretty dangerous depending on the situation but that never seems to affect her decision.

One major thing that must be mentioned is Ran’s fear of the supernatural. Her thought is that karate, judo or anything else won’t work on a ghost. Other such creatures are also inhumanly strong. It’s a pretty irrational fear of hers that won’t go away, no matter how many times her friends tell her monsters don’t exist or even prove otherwise. Despite that Ran is pretty brave. Even if she thinks she has to face down one of these creatures, she will if it’s to help a friend. Sure she may scream or sleep with someone she trusts when she’s scared but Ran will never back down, especially if there’s someone she wants to protect. Bravery is facing what you’re afraid of and Ran has done that time and time again.

Due to her parents and Shinichi’s influence in her life Ran has a strong idealism of justice. She won’t let a bad person die simply because of what they’ve done. Ran will literally put herself at risk in order to stop them from dying. That doesn’t mean she isn’t afraid to rough them up if need be but that’s a small price to pay to keep someone alive. It really helps that she has that strong sense of faith in the people she keeps around her. In one case when a bomber took the agency hostage in order to find his sister’s killer, Ran wouldn’t let the snipers take out the bomber because she believed in Shinichi. She believed in him so much and the fact that his sense of justice was the same that he’d make it so that no one died. And she was right. Justice was given properly and not by bullet.

Ran is one of those natural mother types. After her mother left she was the one who had to take care of all of the household duties because her father wouldn’t. Now that she’s older it just sort of comes naturally to her. There was no hesitation in looking after this strange kid that fell into her life, she simply adjusted to taking care of another person. She also does this for Conan’s friends too. Ran just has this natural instinct to look after them (most especially Ai), especially when they get scared. While she can have this nurturing side that tends to the every day needs, illness or injury, Ran can also be just as stern. She is not afraid to scold them if they cause trouble. Punishment isn’t really a necessary thing Ran needs to do simply because she can tend to make them regret what they did without needing to make a huge deal of it. That doesn’t mean she won’t just that she doesn’t need to. (Not that the Detective Boys would be easy to punish.)

One trait about her that people admire is her strength. Not her physical strength but her inner one. She is one of those people who can see a dead body and eventually bounce back from it. Maybe not as quickly as others but considering how many Ran has seen at her age, one would think she would be permanently emotionally scarred. There’s just something about her that draws all sorts of people to her. Ran is also very determined when she wants to be. If she wants something, Ran will do what it takes to get it - most of the time. It fades when faced with the guy she loves, especially if it has to do with expressing her not-so-secret feelings for him. Ran isn’t afraid to show Shinichi the angry or fierce sides of her, though. She’s also not afraid to use her physical strength to get people to do what she wants. Sometimes Ran can be the scariest thing in the room.

Shinichi often liked to point out that Ran cries a lot and it’s the truth. This is one girl who isn’t afraid to express most of her emotions whether it be through shouting or through tears. And she does have a lot of emotions even if not all of them get expressed with words. The one feeling she doesn’t ever say out loud are the ones she has for Shinichi, at least not a lot of the time anyway. That doesn’t stop people from picking up on it. Pretty much everyone in their class refers to them as ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ or boyfriend and girlfriend even though they’ve never actually made that sort of commitment. While Shinichi generally seemed to ignore it, it always flustered Ran and she would adamantly deny any sort of relationship like that. Honestly, there are times when Ran is just completely dense to this sort of relationship things. She may notice the things her classmates say but when it comes to Shinichi’s feelings they have a good chance of going right over her head. That all changed when she went to London and he outright confessed his feelings in his detective-like ways. Despite the fact that Shinichi confessed, Ran hasn’t say anything back on the matter – much to her friends’ dismay. Ran feels as if she forced him to confess and while it made her happy, it also just doesn’t feel right to her.

Obviously Shinichi is a big part of her life which is understandable considering they’ve spent most of their lives around each other. They started out as friends and it was Shinichi who realized his feelings for her first but he didn’t say anything. His disappearance is hard for Ran to handle and when he does show up isn’t any easier, she’s afraid that she’s going to lose him all over again. She tries to be strong and sometimes Ran manages but whenever she can’t he just always seems to “know” and Ran doesn’t even realize that it’s because Conan is really Shinichi. All she wants is for Shinichi to come back for good, but she could never stop him from doing what he loves. So she waits for him even though waiting is the hardest thing to do.

Of course we must talk about Ran’s parents. She loves both of them and they both care for her immensely. Now if only they could show how much they care towards each other. When she was younger her parents separated which had an affect on their daughter. Ran doesn’t think it was her fault at all but she does try to get them back together. She can see just how much they do care even if they hardly act like it – her father especially. All of her attempts to get them back together usually end up failing. Most of her time is spent with her father seeing as how she lives with him. That mothering side of Ran – came from taking care of her dad. There are times when she’s the responsible one in their relationship, especially when it comes to finances.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:

Ran is just a normal human being. No super-human abilities over here for her.

Strengths:

Household chores - Over the years Ran has learned to take care of the Mouri household. Someone had to, especially when her mother left and her father was lazy in such areas. Ran is an excellent cook. She can also handle any household chores that need to be done, even sewing.

Musically talented - Ran has also taken piano lessons and can play or read sheet music. She's also a good singer and can identify songs if she's heard them before.

Extremely lucky - Whether it's gambling, lotteries or games of chance, Ran has a very good shot at winning. Even when she doesn't know how to play a certain game.

Martial arts & strength - However, her true strength lays in her karate skills. She's been taking lessons since she was young and is a part of the school's karate club. Ran has won several tournaments and is capable of taking down full-grown men with her moves. On top of that her father trained her in Judo though Ran does prefer karate more. It's also important to note her strength. Looking at her one wouldn't think that she could break anything but Ran has been known to break down doors or smash things.

Inner strength - Since Conan came into their lives (and Shinichi practically disappeared) a lot of cases have fallen into her father's lap. This means Ran has seen a lot of dead bodies in that time. Sure she screams when she finds an unexpected dead person but she doesn't cry over it so much anymore. Ran doesn't freeze and hide behind people, cowering like the girl she used to be that day in Tropical Land when someone lost their head (literally) in the seat behind them.

History - Ran is pretty good with history, especially Japanese history. After learning something she can recall it easily when she needs it at later dates.

Deductive reasoning - Okay, Ran pales in comparison to Shinichi/Conan and even others in this area but growing up with a mystery otaku has managed to rub off on her just a little. Sometimes she notices details that even other people may miss or just so happens to be in the right spot at the right time to pick up on a vital clue to a case. There was one instance where she did actually solve a case on her own (though she did get a confidence boost from Shinichi) simply because of how much time Ran spent around her best friend.

Protective - She is one of those people that will protect those she cares about with her life. While Ran will fight off anyone who threatens/harms/does unseemly things to her friends, she is also willing to risk her life for them.

Conan/Shinichi - To Ran, her best friend is often a source of strength for her. With him there she can face anything - even those creepy things that go bump in the night and don't really exist. However, Conan has taken up a big important role in Ran's life that was left when Shinichi disappeared. Conan gives her someone to take care of, someone to draw some strength from when she needs it. In all honesty, Ran can confide in Conan more than she ever could in Shinichi for the simple fact that she couldn't express her feelings to the boy she loved. To her Conan has become like a little brother she never had. She is not afraid to hug him or sleep next to him when she is scared. Just wait until she learns that Conan is really Shinichi and realize all of the stuff she said/did with the guy she loves.

Weaknesses:

The supernatural - The mere mention of ghosts, monsters or other supernatural beings has Ran scared. Despite being told all her life by Shinichi that such things don't exist they still frightened her. Karate doesn't work on ghosts, people. :| So most of the time she won't even try to fight against the supernatural beasties. That is, unless someone else in danger. Give her a bad guy with a weapon any day. She doesn't even like Halloween parties or haunted houses.

Temper - Ran does have a bit of a short temper - especially if the right buttons are pushed. Once she's angry, everything else pretty much goes out the window. She doesn't care if there was someone standing behind the door that's in her way.

Bad liar - While Ran doesn't make a habit of lying all the time she does do it occasionally. Mostly to her parents who she's trying to get back together. Though it's really easy to tell when she does lie because she's so bad at it.

Crier & Screamer - She cries pretty easily. That's because Ran is such a softie at times that she will cry over someone's death. Sometimes her tears have nothing to do with someone dying and everything to do with her own emotions. Ran is also not afraid to scream when she's frightened. It's good for finding out when something happened though.

Protective - This can be seen as both a strength and a weakness. Because she is willing to put her life on the line this can make Ran reckless. Ran will shield someone with her body in order to protect them from a bullet. It doesn't matter how scared she is, Ran is the sort to risk herself to protect someone.

Conan/Shinichi - Conan is one of those people that sometimes really confuses Ran. There were times when she was so certain that he was really Shinichi. Even now she still sees a lot of Shinichi in Conan (because he is Shinichi) but every time something happens to make her think otherwise again. If she knew the truth Ran would be in danger so she's kept in the dark about his true identity. Much to Shinichi's dismay he is responsible for a lot of her loneliness and tears lately because he can't tell her the truth. Honestly, not having him around is hard for Ran. At first she couldn't sleep when he disappeared and there are times when she wants him there but doesn't know that he is, in the form of Conan. Shinichi had been in her life from very early on - earlier than she can even remember - and now he's suddenly just gone always giving her the excuse that he's working on a case. Not only has she lost her best friend from her everyday life, she's also lost the one she loves the most.

[Upon escaping the creepiest building ever she doesn't stop running to put it as far behind her as she possibly could. Not even when her lungs start protesting does she stop, though Ran does slow her pace to more of a jog. While she had first darted through trees and bushes, when Ran found a road she stuck to it, hoping to see someone driving by and possibly flagging them down to tell them what happened. So far no one had come by.]

[However, when she came across a parking lot that still had cars and even electricity Ran does stop. Breathing heavily, she stares at the sign with its burnt out letters d am nd and debates whether it's a good idea to go inside.]

There has to be a phone.

[Spoken more to herself. If not outside the store than surely one of the customers would have a cell phone. Mind made up, Ran moves towards the building though the closer she gets the more she wants to turn back. The urge only grows stronger the instant Ran steps through the door. It looks like a scene from one of those zombie apocalypse movies Sonoko once made her watch. There's barely anything on the shelves, most of it spilled across the floor or completely spoiled where it sat. A foul order seems to have permeated the entire store and is very noticeable to someone who was just breathing in fresh air.]

[Ran covers her nose with the sleeve of her shirt, silently debating walking right out of the store. There isn't anyone here anyway and any appetite she may have had vaporized on inhaling the smell. Seeing it would only make it worse. But there were things she absolutely needed and this was the only place she could see around for a long time. She couldn't keep moving around in the dark.]

[So breathing through her mouth with her sleeve still acting like a mask Ran took that final step into the store that would allow the doors to close behind her. Mentally she made a list in her head of supplies she needed. A phone, flashlight, batteries, bottled water, and food that wouldn't make her sick were at the very top of that list. Maybe a blanket if she had to stay outside all night long.]

[Audio]

[Digging through the store to find a phone hadn't been easy but Ran has successfully managed to find one. Already she's gotten error messages when she tried to call her father, Sonoko and even Shinichi. With the state the food store is in, Ran suspects there probably isn't a police force here either. And this is the sort of place that she absolutely does not want Conan to be. Even if she'd feel better if she knew where he is. Not if the zombies started eating everyone. Because that's what this is, right? Zombie apocalypse.]

H-hello? My name is Mouri Ran. Is anyone out there? Anyone still alive? I think I was unconscious for a while because I woke up in this creepy building and bumped into...something, I don't know what it was. Was this place attacked by zombies? Or some other monsters? [A long pause and Ran takes a deep breath to calm herself.] Where is everyone? Everything looks abandoned.

Prose Log Sample:
This was odd. This place was strangely empty and eerily quiet. It put her on edge the moment she sat up. She dug into her pockets to locate her phone only to come up empty. A quick search of the room told her that her belongings weren’t here either. Not good. She needed to find a phone to call the police. Or Sonoko. If this was a prank her friend was playing on her then she was going to be mad. They had just dealt with the Red Woman and that had been scary enough. Now she had woken up in a room she definitely hadn’t fallen asleep in and it wasn’t even a hotel or her own room. Sonoko enjoyed getting her to do things she was afraid to do, like that haunted house her friend made her go through. She didn’t even have anyone to cling to like Conan or Kazuha. If she had been kidnapped then she would find the people responsible and let them meet the underside of her foot or chat with her fist.

Silently Ran moved to the door, putting a hand on the doorknob. As slowly as she possibly could she opened the door wide enough to peer down the darkened hallway. There was more light streaming into the room than the hallway thanks to the windows. It seemed as if the electricity in the building had been cut off. Ran didn’t really want to wander out into the shadowed corridor. The chances of running into the kidnapper – or worse – was high if she couldn’t see where she was going. But she had no other choice. Not with being located on the fourth floor. It was a straight drop to the ground below. If this had been the first or second floor then Ran would have taken her chances with jumping down.

Taking a deep breath, she pushed open the door just enough to slip through and quickly closed it behind her. The light had been just enough to figure out which way to go in order to find the stairs. With one hand on the wall and the other out in front of her, Ran kept herself as close to the wall as she could possibly get. Only her footsteps made sounds that seemed impossibly loud in the dark. When an echo came Ran paused, listening to see if she could hear it again or if it really had just been her. No more sounds followed and she continued. Just my imagination, she mentally told herself. Fear was getting the better of her; that was all. Two more steps and her outstretched hand bumped into something warm and alive.

Her first reaction was to scream, as loudly as she possibly could and it filled the once-silent hallway. The second was to pull her hand back and take four stumbling steps away from whatever she had just touched. In the dark she couldn’t tell if it was man or monster, or even where to kick. Clearly the only option now was to run. Run away from whatever it was in the opposite direction as fast as she possibly could. And that was what she had every intention of doing. There had to be stairs at the other end of the building, right?
