About: Zaris: A history
Due to his own losses, Zaris is the sort who's willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that no one has to suffer the same kind of loss he did. His sense of justice is strong when it comes to this and so he treats everyone fairly and equally. Of course he cannot prevent death for his enemies but Zaris always wanted a day when he wouldn't have to be the reason for someone's sorrow. He's seen the hardships his people have had to deal with and could only imagine that it was the same for the citizens on the other side as well which is one reason why the King asked him to take on the role of suppressing rebellions as it would require going back and forth between both countries. Even in the short amount of time he's been around Lekanet the people know him to be a fair man they can approach should they need help.
His determination is just as strong as his sense of justice. The moment he received word of his mother's death, Zaris was determined to become stronger. There was no way he could rely on his father so he simply turned to those who would teach him - his grandfather and others who looked after him even at the tender age of five. Zaris didn't want to seek revenge for his mother's death, he wasn't consumed by hatred. No, it was determination that drove him to learn everything he could so that he could protect what was important. It was coupled with his determination to not become like his father, to not walk down the path that led to his father's demise. There was a certain sense of pride that he was known as the grandchild of a famous general but Zaris never wanted to live in that shadow either. He was determined to create his own way through his own actions and they were reflected upon the battlefield. Most who served beside him - even enemies he faced - were aware of the steadfast determination Zaris held. If there was something standing in the way of his goal, he would do whatever it took to overcome it without needing to ruin someone else in the process if he could. Of course there are times when his sense of justice and his determination clash and he must sacrifice one in order to accomplish the other. These are usually things he judges every time it happens.
Due to half-raising himself for most of his life, Zaris can be a serious man. This typically shows through when times are hard. While he was known for enjoying himself every once in a while, he never truly let himself go. To do that seemed impossible when others were still suffering around him. Zaris may not have turned down the opportunity to go out for a drink with his friends but he certainly would not allow himself to get drunk and would never slip out to seek the warmth of another body. Since the war ended, he's not nearly as serious as he once was seeing as how he often teases his new partner but Zaris has the sense to when to stop joking around and take things seriously. He can slip back into the role of being somber in the blink of an eye when he'd been lighthearted just seconds before.
Typically Zaris is a kind man, going out of his way to help the war-torn citizens of his country when he can whether it being giving them a bit of food or even money. He gets along with animals and children alike, the older women find him charming while the younger ones think he's dreamy. If he can help someone, he will find a way to do it even if he has to go out of his way. Zaris gets along the best with his own men. Despite being their commanding officer, he doesn't expect them to respect him just because of his title. Instead he earns it and their trust by living among them as if he wasn't special. They're all the same, they're all fighting the same war and he is no better than they are simply due to the title in front of his men. He will get down in the muck alongside them if that is what it takes. It's because they can see his kindness and loyalty to them that they look up to him and will come to him if they believe there is an issue.
On the opposite scale of that spectrum he can also be cruel and dangerous. Mostly he tries to go for dangerous as that alone is sometimes enough to make an opponent turn tail and run. The cruelness is something he tends to save for those who have angered him, which is extremely difficult to do seeing as how he has a vast amount of patience. Zaris may smile at an enemy but his eyes will say that he will hurt someone if they don't run away or back off. This is what he uses on bullies or cowards, mostly to intimidate them into fleeing without any blood being spilled. Though if necessary, he has the skills and capability to back up his dangerous demeanor. When he's cruel is for those who have wronged someone he cares about deeply. One case of this is when Dyrin was struck unconscious by some rebels they were fighting and he killed them all without any remorse and without even looking back. Unless stopped, Zaris will cut down anyone who's injured someone he cares about and it's in their best interest to not attempt to do it by clashing blades with him. He may not be capable of recognizing once he's lost his sense of right and wrong.
At the same time, Zaris is also somewhat a lonely individual. He grew up essentially as an orphan after his mother died and his grandfather was often away at war. There were some servants around the house who would educate him on a variety of subjects, then soldiers who were around as a teen and he gained friends through bloodshed but at the end of the day, he was alone. Alone in the trenches and at home. The person Zaris is in public is different from the one he is when no one is looking - at least that was the case before Dyrin became a permanent fixture in his life. It was the fiery nature and animated personality that drew him to the other man in the first place - he was so alive even in the middle of all the bloodshed. Since being partnered up with Dyrin he's not nearly so lonely these days. Every day does not feel like he's going through the motions of being happy when he gets to see the smaller man. The fire inside of Dyrin has spread to Zaris, making him feel more alive than he has in years. He finds himself genuinely happy or amused or even angry when it comes to dealing with all things involving Dyrin. Zaris has even allowed himself to enjoy things that he had previously denied himself. There's something to teasing the spy that has always drawn him in, even when they were on opposing sides. It was due to Dyrin that he began to get creative with his battle plans as he attempted to thwart the spy.
When the war ended, there was a sense of relief that overcame him. It might have been a tenative peace that was formed but Zaris believed in it and threw the full weight of his support behind the treaty. Even other generals have been moved to support this peace because of him. However not everyone did and some were ready to start the war up again despite the fact that no one could remember what it was over. This is why when the new king offered Zaris a part in quelling any attempts to sabotage this unstable peace, he took up the cause with vigor. Things were only made better when he was paired up with the spy who had inspired him during the war. While he may have lightly protested this union, Zaris wasn't as displeased with the arrangement as Dyrin seemed to be. Like the new found peace, their relationship was tentative. Not in the way they suppressed uprisings - no, they worked well together in that area - it was in the way they handled each other outside of fights. It seemed as if they were constantly at odds, though Zaris found more amusement in Dyrin's reactions than the other found in his.
Being in Dyrin's company over the last several months is what's really caused a change in him. He's still the kind, determined, justice-oriented, dutiful individual that he's always been but there's a lightheartedness that most wouldn't have after experiencing a life he had. Dyrin has given him a reason to truly live outside of his duties and has experienced the feeling of being in love for the first time. It doesn't matter if he can't say these feelings out loud too often because he enjoys the rough relationship they do share. He'd always been willing to lay down his life for his kingdom out of loyalty and duty but there aren't nearly individuals that he would do it for out of love. Of course he can't show his love in the typical way either because romantic gestures simply do not work for his little spitfire, so he shows it in unconventional ways. Zaris does it through his teasing nature, the way he physically manhandles the other to keep him from danger, how he allows Dyrin to do as he pleases when he isn't about to do something completely stupid and reckless. Only rarely does this break down and he feels the need to truly express himself, typically when Dyrin has done something stupid and reckless.
Inventory:
-His uniform
-Sword
-Set of throwing knives
-Extendable staff
-A cloak that seems to repel most weather elements - rain, snow, wind, blood (most slide off or clean easily but don't soak in liquid, provides excellent warmth against the cold)
-Magical shielding charm that protects against most melee weapons to a moderate extent (aka protects against attacks that would leave shallow wounds, temporarily blocks against ones that would drive deeper)
-A thin metal bracelet that expands to become a shield
-Several tiny tracking chips and wide metal bracelet that contains a screen for said tracking chips
-Notebook with nearly every page full of a language that's legitimately impossible to read by nearly everyone
Feature Type: He will have large triangular ears that are rounded at the point and red in color. A bushy red tail that's turns white halfway down will hang to his knees while both top and bottom sents of his canines will elongate. Starting mid-bicep his arms will be black in color as will his legs from the knees down. A black streak will go from the bottom of his hair and straight down his spines to stop between his shoulder blades to mimic that of a maned wolf.
What are your plans with this character? Zaris would attempt to get involved with the military somehow. He would try to become someone who could patrol streets even if he has to create his own force to do it. Since his sense of justice is so strong he wouldn't discriminate against anyone from other alliances and accept anyone who wanted to join provided they proved they could handle themselves or if they agreed to training beforehand. With his laidback personality, he'd be friendly with new arrivals and calmly tell them what's happening or help them out if they needed.
