CHARACTER
Name: Nezumi || Eve
Series: No.6
Canon: OU
Age: 16
Timeline: End of chapter 19
History:
No. 6 - a city built to provide better lives for people that promised to be a perfect utopia. Children could learn from the best schools, adults could have wonderful careers, everyone was supposed to live without despair. At least that's how it looks to most of the people who dwell there. Under the surface of this paradise lurks darkness, deception and secrets. The people don't realize it but every action is controlled by the government: where they go to school, where they live, where they work - even going so far as to make people disappear when they utter a single word of displeasure of No. 6.
As for Nezumi most of his past is shrouded in mystery and shadows. Whatever happened to him is not yet known except for the fact that he's the only one still alive, his intense hatred for No. 6, his extreme mistrust of everyone around him and the reason he clings to nothing. His story started when he escaped the No. 6 government - wounded, alone and wanted as a criminal at twelve years old. The further he went the more it seemed he was likely to die and the tropical storm that came raging down certainly didn't help matters at all. Nezumi had given up and found himself a place to die until suddenly he heard a yell. Summoning the energy to move Nezumi saw a boy standing out in the rain with his sliding glass doors open. It was like a miracle. One he fully intended to take advantage of.
When the boy went inside to turn off the environmental controls that would have closed the window Nezumi climbed over the balcony and into the room. Instantly he attacked the boy but he quickly lost strength when he realized that the boy wasn't going to tell on him. The boy, Shion, offered to stitch him up and even fed, clothed and gave him a place to stay despite being a dangerous criminal. They talked about live in No. 6 at little but the whole conversation left Nezumi feeling confused about this strange boy he'd happened upon. By the next day Nezumi was gone, stealing a few things along the way.
As it turned out Nezumi escaped the city altogether and lived outside the walls in the West Block for the next four years. He built a life for himself, created robot rats to aid him and earning a living while collecting all sorts of books. However somehow he caught wind that the boy who'd saved him all of those years ago was in trouble. Strange bodies were popping up inside the city, ones that had grown old and withered in a matter of moments. When Nezumi learned that the government was going to pin the strange deaths on Shion he felt obligated to return the favor and save the boy's life. At first he sent his rat as a warning but it was completely lost on Shion and so Nezumi had to rescue him.
Nezumi set a cleaning robot in the government car's path to lure them to stop and get out of the car. He then tricked them by saying his robot rat were also implanted with little bombs that would kill them before getting behind the wheel. Their escape was short-lived as the men took control of the car remotely and began their retrieval. Yet Nezumi was prepared for that as well and they rolled out of the car just before it exploded and then they ran for it. They continued running, using the sewer to leave No. 6 behind once and for all. Outside of the walls of No. 6 they were safe...or at least as safe as they could be. Nezumi brought Shion back to his underground home which was just a single room with a bathroom.
It didn't take long for Shion to succumb to the effects that had taken two other lives and he instructed Nezumi to remove the thing in his neck. Still feeling obligated (not to mention panicked) he did exactly what Shion told him to and removed a wing and a chrysalis from underneath the boy's skin. However it had forever changed Shion physically. Brown hair had become white, brown eyes were now red, a red snake coiled around his body like a tattoo. When Shion finally awoke he panicked over the changes but Nezumi managed to convince him that at least he was alive. They began talking about the black wasp that killed people as it matured and Nezumi was glad. No. 6 would be destroyed and he wouldn't even have to do a thing. That was the moment when Shion realized they had conflicting interests as he wanted to save the people while Nezumi didn't.
Nezumi had said that he had sent a message to Shion's mother and that she had sent one back but neither of them knew what it meant. So that meant a trip to see one of Nezumi's informants. On the way he tried to teach Shion about the hardships and dangers of West Block by disappearing on him but Shion was pretty hopeless about it. Finally they made their way to an old hotel where they were greeted and accepted by stray dogs. There Shion met Inukashi who ran the hotel and rented out her dogs as heaters but also collected information. Inukashi pointed the way to where the note told them to go and so they went.
When they got there a woman was trying to kill a man over the fact that he wanted to break up with her and in order to get rid of the woman, Nezumi conned her by saying they were his kids and they were going to live with him now. She left saying that she didn't want to be involved with a middle-aged man who had kids. It's here where Shion discovered that Nezumi was a performer and he was very impressed. As it turned out that the man used to be a reporter who also knew Shion's mother intimately and they discuss the possibility of Rikiga being Shion's father (though turned out he wasn't). The conversation turned to how Rikiga was suspicious of No. 6 decades ago and about how slowly the city became more isolated from the outside world before anyone ever realized it.
Nezumi became disgusted with Rikiga's new line of work of selling off girls to the officials of No. 6 and the conversation took a turn to offering Nezumi one of these jobs. While he took it in stride and gave cutting remarks back Shion couldn't control his temper and attacked Rikiga. Fortunately Nezumi was able to pull him off and was surprised by the fact that Shion was angry on his behalf. Just as they were about to leave Nezumi found a photo of a group of people standing with Rikiga and Karan and there was one that he recognized. Nezumi said he was the one who named him but that's all he said on the subject. When they returned to their little room Shion said he wanted to know more about Nezumi but that wasn't going to happen. He tried to convince Shion that if his heart was beating in his chest and that he was alive was all he needed to know, there was no way he was just giving up information. Once again he was surprised when the other started spouting off little things about his habits and qualities. Their conversation went from bad to worse and Nezumi confessed that he didn't trust Shion because he was raised in No. 6. It ended with him telling Shion to write a note to his mother.
As Nezumi and Shion continued to live their life, one of Shion's friends went to see his mother. Safu demanded to know where Shion was and eventually Karan told her. The girl said she was going to join him but that never happened as she was picked up after leaving by the Security Bureau and transferred to the Correctional Facility. By the time Nezumi got Karan's note about Safu it was already too late to stop it from happening and he kept it a secret from Shion. Secretly he began collecting information about the facility starting with Inukashi while Shion was doing his new job of washing dogs. It's at this point that Nezumi realized that he's formed an attachment to Shion and while he wondered if he could cut himself lose.
At first Inukashi didn't want anything to do with helping Nezumi learn anything about the Correctional Facility but he threatened that if she didn't then he would never sing for her if she was dying. It was her biggest fear, to die alone and suffering but he swore that if she did this for him then he would come, no matter what. Inukashi also realized his attachment and that he was willing to do this for Shion and thought about if she could use it against him. Before their fight escalated, Shion interrupted them and Nezumi left. Back in their room they talked more about how they both wanted different things from No. 6 and Shion tried to convince to think about a third option. He believed if they brought down the wall then everything would be okay but Nezumi knew it would be chaos. For now though Shion was content to stay with Nezumi.
One day when Shion was in the bazaar buying supplies he ran into Rikiga who wanted to buy him a new coat in order to survive the cold. While in the shop he saw Safu's one-of-a-kind coat and after freaking out he went to Inukashi and found out about where she'd gotten it from. He secretly planned to leave in order to save her and even gave Nezumi what he claimed was a goodnight kiss when it was really a goodbye kiss. Luckily both information from Inukashi and saw right through the kiss so when Shion left in the middle of the night he was ready to follow and stop him. The truth came out on both sides and while Nezumi made Shion swear to never give him a goodbye kiss again, Shion made him promise that he wouldn't hide things so they could stand as equals.
From there they started making plans together and even involved Rikiga by getting him to basically nab an official so they can get information out of him. They use Inukashi as the whore to tempt in the official before they jump him. Nezumi took over and started torturing the man for information but he was stopped by Shion. Apparently honey catches more flies then vinegar because Shion's kindness got the man to talk and give them the information they needed on the security in the Correctional Facility and that the "Cleansing" was going to be happening soon. "Cleansing" is the name the government of No. 6 uses, to the people of West Block they know it as the Manhunt. It's when the city sends weapons and troops into the bazaar to kill people in order to police the population so they never grow too large.
Nezumi ordered Shion to stay close to him from then on and one day while they were in the bazaar talking to "Eve's" manager the city attacked. People died left and right around them, the entire place was leveled but everything went according to plan and they were put inside trucks with all the others who were captured. It was then when Shion first heard Nezumi sing to comfort the people stuck in there with them. When they were herded out like cattle and into an elevator the bottom dropped out from underneath them, though Nezumi was expecting it. The only reason they didn't die was because of the pile of bodies that had formed from the groups before them. They took a short break in a separate room as they waited for the other groups to fall before moving back into the room.
Their next step was to climb the pile of both dead and alive people in order to get higher so they could escape the death trap the government had created. As they made their way through the tunnels they were confronted by a man who seemed to know Nezumi. Nezumi asked to see Rou but the man said that he wasn't supposed to come back and that if he did he'd be killed. A fight started between Nezumi and the man and perhaps Nezumi would have done better but he was worn out from having to help Shion climb and the fact that he was starting to hear the wind. The man had him pinned and was strangling him when he suddenly wakes up on a couch in a lobby.
Personality:
Nezumi is (let's be honest here) very self-serving, so much so that he only looks out for himself and only thinks about his goals. There is no one he wouldn't walk all over or even kill to get what he wants. He's not above using blackmail or threats either making him rather cruel at times. On principal Nezumi never let anyone or anything close to him because he sees them as weaknesses, something to lose or be threatened with. Living the life he has made Nezumi a cautious person, he doesn't open doors right away when knocking comes not even for children in need of help. All life was about was about taking care of number one - himself.
At least it started off that way. Then Shion fell into his life and things changed without Nezumi even realizing it. At first it was just about repaying a debt seeing as how Shion once saved his life but slowly the boy began to wind his way under Nezumi's skin. He tried so hard to keep himself distant from Shion knowing that they would end up on opposite sides of the fight one day. It wasn't until the boy suddenly reached out to touch his neck when Nezumi realized how vulnerable he'd made himself to this individual. He was shocked to discover that he hadn't blocked the move that could mean life or death. Nezumi also does incredibly dangerous things for Shion such as risking his own life which he would never do for anyone else.
To most people he comes across Nezumi can be very rude and blunt with his words as he doesn't care if he hurts their feelings or not. He's a realist so Nezumi speaks the truth about situations, no matter if it frightens them or not. Sometimes he even says it with a smile to purposely creep them out. In his life there are only facts, everything is black or white for him and he cannot see the gray in between but he's perfectly aware of it. However, this makes him easily adaptable to the situation he's been placed in as he quickly accepts the facts all around him and not cling to stories that people tell themselves to make themselves feel better.
His realistic view makes Nezumi a survivalist no matter what the situation. He knows how to take care of himself in all the ways a person needs while growing up outside of No. 6 which can get very rough. Not only did he learn to fight but Nezumi can cook, blend in with a crowd, earn money and live off very little supplies. Since he has no real attachment to anything it's easy to pick up and leave any time he wants. He also has a tendency to live away from others, preferring isolation and only dealing with people on his own terms. People are like crutches - use when needed but don't depend on them when your life's on the line.
Another thing to note is his temper. When people push the right buttons it doesn't take much to get him angry and start threatening them. Yet Nezumi never backs down from anything, he has his beliefs and there's not much that can change his mind. To go with his temper is his hatred for No.6 - the people, the city, everything about it would be better off destroyed in his opinion. He's never thought anything else about it, not until Shion mentioned bringing down the wall that separates the people. Even then all he could see was in black and white - if the wall came down then the citizens of No.6 and the outer blocks would just destroy each other.
However, not everything about Nezumi is bad. As it turns out he has a deep interest in books of all sorts. His entire place might as well be one gigantic library and he reads in his spare time. Most of the books are classic and he enjoys poetry along with the works of Macbeth and Faust to the point where he can quote them on the spot. Not only can he recite them but he's a performer as well and he actually makes a living doing this under the stage name of "Eve". Practically everyone in the West Block knows Eve, often picturing him as some sweet, little angel. They're pretty surprised when they meet the real person behind Eve.
Yet there is a bit of kindness to Nezumi. He often sings to people who are dying slow torturous deaths (usually for a price but a guy has to make a living). Recently there have been moments where he simply sang in order to comfort people as they lay breathing in their last breaths. His song has been compared to the wind that scatters flowers and frees souls from the mortal confines. Shion's presence in his life has made Nezumi change in many ways, he's no longer always thinking about himself first though those moments are very rare.
Nezumi is also fairly intelligent and a quick-witted strategist. He can turn any fight around and has no qualms about how he does it. Not only that but he also built his own robot rats (most likely from scraps discarded in West Block) that follow every command and can also show things like a projector. Strategy is a big deal to him seeing as how he plans to take down the corrupt No. 6 and even plays a part in getting in the Correctional Facility to save someone. He can also find his way in and out of places most people wouldn't even think of going such as using sewers to escape.
Abilities/Additional Notes:
His only supernatural ability is his singing which is so beautiful that it can send suffering people off to the afterlife like all of their pain was gone. Otherwise his abilities are all things he's learned to do such as wield a knife, fight, build mechanical robot rats and play dirty. It should be noted that the "scarf" he wears around his neck is actually more like a little blanket and is a fabric called superfiber. This superfiber is like a flexible shield and it can help protect sensitive body parts from obtaining an injury. Nezumi also has a problem. There are times when he sort of blacks out, except it's not in the traditional sense. His body acts like it's under attack and he hears the wind - a song on the wind and it's as if he's been transported to somewhere completely different. He can recover from this all on his own but it's pretty debilitating.
Third-Person Sample:
Jolting awake Nezumi sat up, his eyes opening to immediately take in his surroundings. This was definitely not the tunnel he'd last been in. In fact, it looked too nice to be anything but a place in No. 6. Fuck, was his first thought. Where is Shion? Last he remembered the idiot had come back when Nezumi told him to run. There had been a combination of things happening there at the end - the voice on the wind that only he could hear, hands on his throat trying to choke the life out of him and yelling above him. Now suddenly here he was sullying a pristine couch with smears of red that hadn't yet dried on his clothes. The rank smell of death and the metallic tang of blood was far more noticeable in this sterile environment.
People would look over at him only briefly before whispering to their companions and hurrying on as if nothing had ruined their perfect little day. To be honest it reminded him of the life in No. 6. The self-claimed utopia that made Nezumi feel sick to his stomach and made his hatred stronger. Wherever he was, this place was similar. People saw but what they saw was ignored, pushed aside for what they wanted to be their perfect little haven. He waited on the couch for them to 'discard' what didn't fit into the mold of what was accepted and not. Any minute now people from the Security Bureau would walk through those front doors, slap handcuffs on him and take him away. Hopefully back to the Correctional Facility so he could find Shion and safe that friend of his.
Except the minutes kept ticking away and no one came. It was clear that this was not any place in No. 6. No one was coming for him. Seeing as how that was the case he decided to find out just exactly what was going on. As most of the people meandering through seemed intent on avoiding him, Nezumi went for the guy behind the counter. "What is your name?" Was the question out of the man's mouth the moment he stepped up.
"How about you tell me some information? Starting with where I am," his voice was neutral.
"Sir, please tell me your name," came the reply that only served to irritate Nezumi.
"I simply want to know where I am," he said with a well-practiced fake smile . "A gentleman such as yourself can answer such a simple little question for a lost wayward traveler, can't he?"
Instead of having the effect Nezumi wanted the man just asked for his name again. His eyes narrowed as he debated the idea of leaping over the counter and attempting to strangle the information out of the man but he was very well aware of the men behind the security desk. So for now he simply gave his name and retrieved a room key-card in return. Even though he wasn't going to stay Nezumi could take advantage of the free facilities and clean the blood off before making his escape. He'd draw less attention that way, besides the blood had begun to crust as he had waited and his gloves were becoming hard to move.
First-Person Sample Post:
[Voice]
[All is quiet for a moment except for the hum of a refrigerator. If Nezumi can have conversations without actually showing his face then he's going to. Since arrival he's taken a shower to rid himself of the blood that had clung to him in the aftermath of climbing the pile of bodies to escape whatever tortures the Correctional Facility had in store for them next. He also cleaned his bloody clothes - not that anyone will know that considering he can't be seen.]
From everything that's happened since my arrival it seems as though we're expected. And expected to stay a while if the accommodations are anything to go by. [Nezumi doesn't sound pleased at all.]
The man behind the counter was ever so helpful in filling me in and I'm sure that everyone will agree. [The sarcasm in that sentence probably does not go unnoticed.] If anyone has anything else they'd like to add to it I'd like to hear it. [While he's used to paying or even gathering information himself, he suspects that the people who were brought here will probably give it up for free. It'll have to do until he can get his robot mice rebuilt to help him snoop around.]
And I suppose if we're going to be stuck here together for a while I should at least introduce myself. My name is Nezumi. Shion if you're here then you'd better answer. [Yes, that is all he's going to give up before ending the connection.]
